Thanks to this Labour Government, The Ministry of Defence has announced a major new childcare support scheme that could save eligible Armed Forces families up to £6,000 per child each year. The initiative, due to roll out from September 2026, is aimed at helping military families in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland access the same level of childcare support already available in England and overseas postings.

For many serving personnel and their families, balancing military life with childcare responsibilities can be one of the biggest challenges they face. Frequent relocations, deployments, irregular working patterns and the demands of service life often make accessing affordable childcare far more difficult than for civilian families. This latest announcement recognises those unique pressures and represents another significant step towards improving family support across Defence.

Under the new scheme, eligible working families with children aged from 9 months old will be able to claim reimbursement towards childcare costs through the MOD’s existing Early Years childcare reimbursement system. In Scotland and Wales, support will apply until children reach the age of three, while in Northern Ireland support will extend until age four. The scheme is expected to benefit hundreds of military families and could make a real difference to both household finances and family wellbeing.

The announcement also highlights a broader shift in how Defence is approaching support for service personnel and their families. Alongside childcare reforms, recent measures have included improvements to military housing, expanded wraparound childcare provision and one of the largest Armed Forces pay rises in decades. Recruitment and retention remain key priorities for Defence, and practical family support is increasingly recognised as essential to maintaining morale, stability and operational effectiveness.

For many families across the Armed Forces community, this new childcare support will not only ease financial pressures but also provide greater flexibility and reassurance during some of the most demanding years of family life. It sends a strong message that the contribution made by military families is being recognised and valued alongside the service of those in uniform.
